Anxiety Breathwork
in Brighton.
Anxiety has a physiology. Breathing is one of the most direct and measurable ways to influence it — but only when applied correctly and safely.
At BreathLab Brighton, sessions target the physiological root of anxiety: overbreathing, CO₂ imbalance, and nervous system dysregulation — not the symptoms alone.
Why Breathing Drives Anxiety
During anxiety, the sympathetic nervous system triggers faster, shallower breathing — often through the mouth. This reduces carbon dioxide in the blood, which shifts blood pH and triggers a cascade of physical sensations: dizziness, tingling, chest tightness, air hunger. These sensations then increase fear, which increases breathing rate further. Breathing becomes both a symptom and a driver of anxiety.
This cycle — known as the hyperventilation loop — can be interrupted through structured breathing retraining. Slow, nasal, diaphragmatic breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system and begins to restore CO₂ balance.
Regulation first.
Stimulation never.
For anxiety, the most evidence-supported methods are slow, nasal, and regulation-focused. Intense hyperventilation-style breathwork — such as Wim Hof or Holotropic — can trigger panic sensations in anxiety-prone individuals and is not used as a starting point at BreathLab.
Sessions begin with assessment, move to nasal breathing correction, then introduce slow paced breathing and gentle CO₂ tolerance work at a pace that matches your nervous system baseline.
This is a physiological intervention — grounded, not mystical.
Evidence-informed methods used
Coherent Breathing
~5 breaths/min — improves HRV and vagal tone
Buteyko Retraining
Reduces chronic overbreathing and air hunger
Nasal Breathing Correction
Reduces airway irritation and respiratory rate
CO₂ Tolerance Training
Addresses the physiological root of panic sensations
Diaphragmatic Breathing
Activates parasympathetic nervous system
What Happens in an Anxiety Session
No extreme techniques are introduced without prior assessment. Every session is calm, guided, and progressed at your pace.
Breathing Pattern Assessment
We identify overbreathing patterns, mouth breathing habits, and baseline CO₂ tolerance before any intervention begins.
Nasal Breathing Correction
Restoring nasal breathing is often the first practical step — it directly reduces respiratory rate and airway irritation.
Slow Breathing Training
Coherent breathing at around 5–6 breaths per minute is introduced to activate parasympathetic tone and improve heart rate variability.
CO₂ Tolerance Exercises
Gentle reduced-breathing drills help stabilise carbon dioxide levels, interrupting the physiological cycle that drives panic sensations.
Nervous System Stabilisation
Each session closes with a regulated, calm baseline — and a home practice framework you can use between sessions.

Breathwork is not a replacement for medical or psychiatric care. It can complement existing support.
How Supervised Sessions Differ from Online Breathwork
Online / YouTube
- ✕Generic techniques not adapted to your baseline
- ✕No screening for contraindications
- ✕No monitoring during the session
- ✕Risk of triggering panic without support
- ✕No progression framework
BreathLab Brighton
- Individually assessed and adapted
- Safety screened before every first session
- Monitored throughout by Feodor Kouznetsov
- Paced to avoid triggering panic responses
- Progressive structure across sessions
Buteyko vs Other Breathwork Methods
Buteyko is typically the most conservative and regulation-focused.
| Method | Breath Speed | Stimulation Level | Primary Focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| ButeykoThis method | Slow, reduced | Low | CO₂ tolerance & nasal breathing |
| Coherent Breathing | Slow, rhythmic | Low | HRV & vagal regulation |
| Wim Hof | Fast cycles + holds | High | Resilience & stress exposure |
| Holotropic | Fast, prolonged | Very High | Altered states |
| Rebirthing | Continuous | Moderate–High | Emotional release |
Anxiety Breathwork — Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about breathwork for anxiety and panic regulation in Brighton.
It can reduce intensity, especially if slow breathing techniques have been practised consistently beforehand. It works best as a trained skill rather than a last-minute fix.
